Sociology

We follow a two-year GCSE course covering a range of Sociological themes and skills. There are two examinations at the end of year 11. Paper 1 (The sociology of Families & Education) is 50% of the total marks and Paper 2 (The sociology of crime and deviance & social stratification) is the other 50%. Both papers are 1hr 45mins and contain 100 marks. We study the themes within each paper from the point of view of real-world issues as well as research methods.

A-level Sociology will help you to make sense of the society we live in and understand the cultural and identity issues which affect us all. You will learn plenty of skills including, the use of evidence to support your arguments, how to investigate facts, and critical thinking. It is relevant to the society you live in, so you are bound to enjoy learning about topics that are relevant to everyday life; plus, it opens the door to a fantastic range of interesting careers. Sociology covers a wide range of issues that affect millions of people around the world. It widens your awareness of the surrounding world and teaches people to communicate their own views on many different topical areas. It reflects the fast-changing world you live in.

There will be three 2hour written exams at the end of the course, with 80 marks per paper, each 33.3% of the A-Level grade. There is no coursework element although research projects will be conducted during the courses
